![]() ![]() After this happened several times in a row we switched to Unique (a slower powder) and the problem went away. ![]() The velocity was 300 m/s or 1,000 fps, out of a 21 inch, unported barrel. The standard pistol primers did not indicate any sign of high pressure. Curiously, no damage occurred, and the bullets hit the target as though nothing was amiss. Interestingly, we were using N 310 powder in a Thompson Contender, which developed the disconcerting habit of opening up by itself each time it was fired. The solvent was a stroke of genius because it rapidly evaporated, did the job very effectively, and left nothing extra inside their suppressors. Prior to this a filler, such as nitrated cotton fiber or kapok, had been used on large-volume shells. This helped to achieve better combustion and improved uniformity. A bullet was then seated and heavily crimped in place. After this solvent evaporated, the powder was thus sealed into the rear of large-volume cartridge cases. They also developed a system using a few drops of solvent to dissolve the upper layer of their fast powder. It should be mentioned that the Finns turned some of their subsonic rifle bullets backwards for better accuracy and improved terminal performance. The Germans developed a very fast powder for their suppressed rifles during World War II, and this may be a very close duplicate of that powder. Typo. The powders of choice have been the time-honored Unique and a powder made in Finland by Vihtavuori Oy called N 310. You only other option is to become a better shot so you wont need to shoot twice, then it wont matter and you can use the accurate full power loads. 308 as well as best possible accuracy is to use as heavy a bullet as the rifling twist can stabilize at the intended velocity range. Man I love being able to crank a full tube of rounds out of that thing without spending 1$ :-)ĮDIT: 8 inches over 50 yards, not 30. The best thing to do to get a sub sonic load in. I reduced the load to 10 grns of TB and it was subsonic. Unfortunately it was supersonic but my 5 test shots connected around 3/4'. Used 10.5 of Trail Boss with a Remington Premier Accu Point 180 grn bullet. (lead shavings between the case mouth and the bullet I suspect) Re: recipe for 308 subsonic loads Tried my first sub loads today since my can will be here monday. Leads up the barrel without gas checks, but I think that had more to do with not having the case expander and shaving every bullet and not getting positive crimps. Its slow as hell but surprisingly accurate at 50 yards and quiet enough to shoot in the back yard. Oh, and mouse farts are 7 grains of Red Dot with 150 grain cast bullet. I hand measure every load and if I use H335 it ends up all over the place. Reasonably accurate and as close to Hollywood quiet as you get. Out of a 24' barrel I shoot 183 gr cast bullets with (I think) 9 grains of trailboss. I am willing to change powders as long as it is a pellet or flake powder. Supersonic is going to vary somewhat based on your location and weather conditions so it is hard to say what Supersonic will be for you. I completely understand that these loads are at my own risk. I do not have a chronograph yet, but I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a cowboy load for a 1/10 Marlin 336 lever action that they have proven over the years. Now I love my mouse farts, but they drop 8 inches over 50 yards because they are going so slow and I was looking forward to shooting a little flatter. Hodgdon Trail Boss is a great smokeless powder for cartridges like the old 45-70 Government or subsonic load in. I finally bought a the case expander die and a pack of gas checks, so I can ramp up the speed on my cast boolits a bit, but the one experiment I did was a little too hot even though I dropped 2 grains of H4895 from the lowest recommended load from the book (27 grains instead of 29) It put a 1/2 in deep crater in my mild steel gongs at 40 yards.
